Oakland Zoo

Founded in 1922 by naturalist Henry A. Snow, the Oakland Zoo is a modern zoo located in scenic in Knowland Park. The Oakland Zoo features more than 660 native and exotic animals, from baboons to camels, hyenas, lions, and a wide range of reptiles and birds. Many of the animals at the Oakland Zoo are housed in natural habitats that allow the animals to roam freely.

    Featuring lions, tigers, giraffes, gazelles, and an award winning elephant exhibit that allows the elephants to roam, the Oakland Zoo’s African Savannah is a focal point of the Zoo.
  • Rain Forest.

    This lush, tropical rainforest area features interesting rockwork, living vines, climbing structures and verdant foliage, and houses a number of animals including tigers, snakes, birds, primates, and more, all housed in moated, cage-free islands that allow the animals to roam freely. Favorites of the Rainforest are the White-Handed Gibbons, Tucans, Chimpanzees, and Tamarins.
  • Wayne &Gladys Valley Children's Zoo.

    The Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo is a four-acre exhibit that features a children's museum a playground and live animals. Children will learn through exploration of the lush animal habitats highlighting animal favorites like alligators, river otters, tortoises, lemurs, fruit bats, reptiles, amphibians, and more. The Children’s Zoo also features several fun play areas like the giant lily pad hop pond, bug climbers and giant spider web. A highlight of the Children’s Zoo is the 50-foot-high Malayan Fruit Bat exhibit, which showcases the bats' six-foot wingspans in free flight. [Top]

The Oakland Zoo is open daily from 10am-4pm, except Christmas and Thanksgiving. Admission is $10.50 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and children aged 2-14, and children under age two are free.
